Occupational Therapy Assistant
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
The OTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on treatment interventions and goals formulated by an occupational therapist. Incumbent will carry out a general treatment plan with direct involvement of an occupational therapist. The OTA supervises OTA students, and overseeing their clinical training experiences at the technical level of education and provides department in-service training. The duties and responsibilities of this position are carried out throughout the medical center including various clinical, administrative and patient care areas associated with PM&RS. Functions include (but are not limited to):
Ability to review patient data and make a preliminary determination of their needs, to obtain a subjective history, and to interpret information gained through subjective history Ability to implement a patient care plan incorporating activity analysis theory. Ability to modify and adapt therapeutic interventions for simple and complex cases with a wide range of diagnoses and disabilities. Knowledge of a variety of standardized assessment tools in order to provide a more comprehensive intervention under the supervision of an occupational therapist. Knowledge of basic group techniques and interpersonal communications. Ability to provide complex/multi-step instruction to patients, caregivers, and other health care professionals adapting instruction to meet the learning needs of the individual and for optimal care. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-06 or equivalent). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to utilize more complex therapeutic techniques and interventions, utilizing problem-solving skills, to maximize patient's functional status. 2. Ability to modify and adapt therapeutic interventions for simple and complex cases with a wide range of diagnoses and disabilities. 3. Ability to identify and recommend complex adaptive and assistive devices and durable medical equipment. References:

Lift, push, pull 45 lbs. and over.Position requires heavy lifting and heavy carrying; pulling hand over hand; pushing; reaching over shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking; standing; kneeling; repeating bending; climbing, use of legs and arms; both legs required. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; good vision; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability required. Work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, or similar activities.
