Human Factors Research Specialist (Cabin Safety)

Performs a mixture of routine and multiple and varying assignments under the limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, team coordinator. Acts as an individual contributor and/or member of a team. May perform some leadership functions for small projects/programs/teams.As an associate investigator, conducts aircraft cabin safety research studies involving the identification and development of equipment and techniques designed to minimize the risk of injury during and after aircraft accidents, incidents, and related emergency aircraft evacuations. Supports accomplishment of all aspects of research project planning including evaluation of research objectives, literature review, experimental protocol development, specifying required equipment, instrumentation and other resources, determining data to be collected and the means of collecting the data, selecting procedures to analyze the data, Statement of Work preparation for human subject contracts, and preparation of applications for submission to the CAMI Institutional Review Board (IRB) on use of human subjects.Supports accomplishment of research and training activities including test equipment/facility preparation and collection of data from human subjects during surveys and performance tests conducted. Most tests and training activities will be conducted using CAMI's unique research facilities including (1) Water Survival Research Tank (swimming pool); (2) B-747 Aircraft Environment Research Facility; (3) Flexible Cabin Simulator (FlexSim), and (4) B-727 Aircraft Fire Laboratory. Because of the nature of the facilities and tests conducted, accomplishment of these activities requires mobility, eyesight, hearing, and swimming skills. A pre-employment physical will be required.Uses knowledge of statistical procedures and statistical software to conduct statistical analysis of data. Is familiar with underlying statistical assumptions, knows which statistical procedures are appropriate for different kinds of research data, and can use standard statistical software packages, such as Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), to analyze research data obtained from studies. Is able to interpret results of statistical analyses based on data derived.Prepares technical reports, memoranda, journal articles, presentation slides, and other types of scientific documentation of research results for publication. Prepares tables, graphs, figures that represent results of data analyses. Writes in a clear, concise, and comprehensive manner in accordance with appropriate style guidelines. Uses word processing software such as Microsoft Word along with other software such as PowerPoint, Excel, etc.Serves as a technical expert on a variety of cabin safety research topics including:
FAA policy and regulatory requirements; flight attendant duties and responsibilities; emergency operations, procedures, and associated training; passenger behavior and handling practices; emergency equipment and tools; cabin crew resource management, exit row seating, carry-on-baggage, and passenger information media. Provides advice and instruction related to these topics to internal and external groups. Participates in Industry/Professional organizations that are a forum for sharing technical information or developing Safety Standards.Supports the development of long-term and short-term plans for Team execution, including supporting the preparation of administrative documents necessary to justify and acquire necessary resources and planning of cabin safety workshops.Supports implementation of all required FAA Quality Management System, Safety, Environmental, Institutional Review Board, and Health Standards (e.g., ISO 9001, OSHA, and EPA).Applies experience and detailed technical knowledge of human factors research and civil aircraft cabin safety requirements to plan and accomplish assignments. Experience conducting research studies related to general experimental psychology, or applied psychology, or human factors/engineering psychology; Examining scientific literature to find articles related to the research study and summarizing them in a literature review; Planning research study protocol, preparing data collection methodology, and executing protocol to collect research data; Assembling research data, collecting data, and entering research data into digital files; Preparing tables/graphs displaying research results; Preparing reports and presentation materials documenting the research question and protocol, statistical analyses, results, and recommendations concerning findings; and Presenting results of research studies to others.OREducation Substitution:

Candidates must demonstrate experience using applied psychological research methods and techniques to include applying qualitative and quantitative methods for assessment and analysis and using inferential statistical methods; And will have documented experience in the preparation of technical and scientific reports/manuscripts and presentation of results at scientific conferences as evidenced by publications or presentations in peer reviewed journals, textbooks, or other professional media/forums.
